Countering Islamophobia Workshop

Community workshop
Price ~$35 per person

Thu, Oct 24, 3 - 4.30pm

What you will get out of the workshop:

  • A better understanding of how Islamophobia plays a role in society, especially US society, and where you may encounter it

  • How Islamophobia ties to systems of oppression and its role in DEI conversations

  • An understanding of common Islamophobic tropes and how you can counter them

  • Interactive conversations with your peers about how and where you have encountered Islamophobia and what to do about it

  • A toolbox of strategies to act as an advocate for Muslims

  • A filled out worksheet of self-reflective exercises about where you are in your journey to be an advocate for Muslims and a plan for next steps you will take

The 90-min workshop consists of three parts:

  • Understanding Islamophobia: Here we unpack Islamophobia through historical data, statistics and examples. We also look at the racial component of Islamophobia.

  • Countering Misconceptions: In this section we’ll learn how to counter common misconceptions about Muslims and Islam using real-world examples.

  • Advocacy and Allyship: In the final section, we’ll go over strategies with which you can serve as a better ally to your Muslim allies. If you’re Muslim yourself, we’ll also talk about how you can speak up for your own community.

This workshop is perfect for you if you answer “yes” to any of the following questions:

  • You want to learn more about Islamophobia, its history, and ties to racism.

  • You want to learn how to be a better advocate for your Muslim peers.

  • You are Muslim yourself but want to know how to speak up for your community.

  • You’re looking for healing spaces to talk about Islamophobia especially in the current context of genocide in Gaza and dehumanization of AMEMSA (Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian) voices.

About your co-facilitators:

What past attendees have said

  • A Better Force is so thoughtful in holding space for tough subjects and conversations in the workshops they facilitate. It's hard to condense a lot of information in a 1.5 hour workshop but their workshops are rooted in so much knowledge and reflection that tackles the root of these issues! I felt really grateful to learn from them.

  • A Better Force takes a through and thoughtful approach in tackling subjects that are complex and sensitive. Saamiya and Sarah are able to skillfully facilitate workshops and make challenging conversations accessible and thought provoking. I attended their workshop, Shining a Light on Islamophobia this past spring and was impressed with how much they covered in just one hour. I've recommended this workshop to others and would like to have them provide training in professional and community spaces that I am connected with.

  • I registered for the Islamophobia workshop and found it to be very accessible and informative. The leaders did a fantastic job of covering a dense topic in a relatively short amount of time. I've since leaned on my new knowledge when encountering "casual" Islamophobia, which opened space in conversations for new ways of thinking!
